WHAT IS COHOUSING?

Cohousing is a collaborative housing model where people live together in a community which is designed to foster social interaction, sharing, and a sense of belonging, while also maintaining their own private space. Residents in a cohousing community actively participate in the design, creation, and management of their community.

Each household in a cohousing community has their own private home, which typically includes a kitchen, living space, and bedrooms. However, the community also features shared spaces such as a communal kitchen, dining area, gardens, meeting spaces, and often facilities like workshops or guest rooms.

Decision-making in a cohousing community often involves consensus-building processes where community members take an active role in the management, rules, and activities within the community.

Cohousing communities vary widely in size, design, and governance structures, but they all prioritise the principles of collaboration, social interaction and sustainability. The model promotes a balance between privacy and community, allowing individuals or families to enjoy both personal space and the benefits of a close-knit, supportive community.
